How to choose a ballet leotard: 5 steps

The leotard is a dancer's most basic garment. The right one doesn't restrict movement, hugs the body and lets the teacher see your posture clearly. Keep these five points in mind.

1. Choose the size by measurements

A leotard should hug without pinching. Torso length from shoulder to crotch, bust and hip measurements matter most. If you are between sizes and have a long torso, go for the larger one.

2. Cut: camisole, wide straps or sleeves

Camisole leotards look clean and give freedom of movement. Wide straps offer more support. Short or long sleeves are a good choice for cold studios.

3. Fabric: stretch and breathability

Cotton-elastane blends are soft and breathable; microfibre and polyamide blends are shinier, dry quickly and keep their shape for longer.

4. Colour: ask your school

Many ballet schools set colours by level. If you are free to choose, black, navy and burgundy always look elegant; pastel shades stand out on stage.

5. Care

Wash your leotard at 30 °C in a laundry bag and dry it in the shade to keep its stretch and colour.
