Checklist for kids starting ballet

If your child is starting ballet, there are as many questions as there is excitement. You don't need an expensive wardrobe for the first classes; these basics are enough.

Basic clothing

• Ballet leotard: in the colour set by the school, snug but not tight.
• Ballet tights: usually pink or skin tone; convertible tights are practical.
• Skirt or tutu: optional for young groups at many schools, but kids love them.

For cold days

A light bolero or warm-up cardigan helps start class warm. It comes off once class begins.

Hair and accessories

Hair should be in a bun: keep hairpins, a bun net and a hairband in the bag. A small dance bag keeps everything together.

Sizing tip

Kids grow fast, but a leotard that is too loose slips and hides posture. Buy the right size; if between sizes, choose the larger one.
